Howdy! My name is Dillon Overton. While I was born and raised in Texas, my wife's family has lived in Cole Camp for generations. So a few years ago we moved to Missouri where our four young kids could grow up close to their grandparents. I have always preferred rural life, and we plan to be here for the long haul.

My own professional background has included eight years working as an advanced community paramedic with tech rescue specialization; later, I moved into technology, working in marketing, social media, cybersecurity, and customer service. My experience has also included disaster relief, groundskeeping, farm and animal work, and a fair assortment of practical jobs. My hobbies are just as diverse, including becoming a Texas Master Gardener and ham radio operator, along with various other interests. I have generally been the sort of person who enjoys learning and solving problems.

My broad professional and life experiences have helped me develop the ability to look at a problem and draw from my experiences to create solutions. That is essentially what I do now with Steady Hand Home Service.

Why "Home Service"?

There's often a big gap between doing something yourself and calling a contractor or a large specialty service. In many homes there are plenty of jobs that need to be done, but it's expensive and inconvenient to call several different companies, pay several service charges, or spend a week trying to find someone who is willing to come out for a relatively small project.

As I've talked with folks around town, I've been told there is a need for someone local who can reliably help with this kind of work.

Because most think of a "handyman" as cheap construction work, I'm aiming to be something different.

To explain what I mean: my background as a paramedic brought me into all kinds of homes—when someone called 911, they expected a skilled, trustworthy professional to show up and meet their medical needs. Sometimes they needed immediate, lifesaving cardiac care; other times they just needed emotional support and someone to talk with them.

In the same way a paramedic or home health professional takes care of your health needs, I see Steady Hand Home Service as professional care for your home.

You may need a cabinet door repaired, your garage cleaned and organized, a garden brought back under control, a printer fixed, or a security camera installed; maybe you have a long list of 20-minute jobs that have been sitting unfinished for months or years. You're unlikely to find one person to handle all of these jobs, but calling several services would be expensive and might take scheduling separate visits across multiple weeks.

My goal with Steady Hand is to make that simple.

What “Steady Hand” Means

The name comes partly from Ecclesiastes 9:10: “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.”

The book of Ecclesiastes deals directly with the fact that life changes, seasons change, and much of what we spend our time chasing is temporary. At the same time, it teaches that work is worth doing well while we have time to do it.

Those ideas are very meaningful to me.

My EMS background also helped shape the name. In an emergency, you need to be quick, but you need to be accurate; you need to be firm, but you also need to be understanding. You need to be skilled while also being humble. Being steady means being sturdy and consistent no matter what changes around you.

That is also how I approach work around someone's home.

If a job requires other tools, asking someone with more experience, or taking extra time before starting, that's part of doing it correctly. I'm not a salesman, and I'm not looking to make a quick buck.

I aim to do a great job the first time, build relationships and a good reputation, and take care of the community by doing work that leaves the homeowner happy.

What Steady Hand Can Do for a Homeowner

The advantage of Steady Hand is having someone local available for all kinds of work.

If I am installing a window air conditioner, I am going to clean the window and take care of the area rather than simply putting the unit in and leaving. If I am cleaning out a garage and a broken shelf needs repair, I can handle that while I am there. If you're having me put in a raised bed for a vegetable garden and you also want a flagpole installed, add it to my to-do list!

I also expect Steady Hand to be useful to several different kinds of people.

  • Older homeowners: Many people have spent their entire lives taking care of their own homes and property and want things done a certain way; they may simply need another set of hands now that the work that has become more physically difficult.
  • Distant family members or vacation properties: If someone lives outside Cole Camp but needs a few projects handled, I can work directly with the homeowner or at the property, providing peace of mind that there is someone local who can help when needed.
  • Busy families: Plenty of people are capable of doing their own repairs or projects but would rather spend their limited time doing something else. A person working a full week may know how to flush a water heater or repair a fence, but that does not mean they want to spend every Saturday doing it.
  • Property managers, landlords, and realtors: Mixed lists are common with these folks. I'll change locks, handle cleaning, landscaping, minor repairs, appliance work, etc. Being able to work through that list without coordinating several companies can save a considerable amount of time.

My goal is to be convenient, useful, fair, and reliable.

Again, my work ethic, local availability, and broad skill set are the value of Steady Hand. I am not trying to be the cheapest person someone can find, and I am not going to replace licensed contractors.

And if a job needs a licensed electrician, plumber, roofer, arborist, or contractor, I will say so. Knowing when not to take a job is part of being professional.

By doing good work at a fair price, I believe I can serve the needs of the local community, building a reputation that keeps me busy and keeps my customers happy.

What You Can Expect When I Am in Your Home

Trust matters to me because I do not take visiting your home or property for granted, and I want you to feel comfortable and at ease while I'm working.

Whether you live in a large house, a small house, live alone, have children, have pets, or you're dealing with a home that is not in the condition you would like, the same basic standard of respect applies.

I'll use shoe covers and drop cloths when appropriate, take care around floors, walls, and belongings, and clean up when the work is finished. After all, it would be fairly ironic to offer cleaning services and then leave a mess after doing a repair.

I also take privacy seriously. Small towns are often known to gossip, but your personal business is not mine to share.

My years in EMS also made me familiar with working around illness, disability, clutter, sensitive issues, and homes in every kind of condition. I've seen every kind of embarrassing situation. You do not need to clean the house before calling me to help, and there's no need to apologize because a garage, room, yard, or other part of the property has gotten out of hand.

Finally, while I aim to do excellent work every time, if a mistake does happen, I will own it, fix the problem, and make sure you are confident and happy with the service you received.

The Steady Hand Reputation

I am less interested in doing one random job for hundreds of people I never see again than I am in building a reputation with people who know they can call me when something comes up.

To me, the ideal relationship is one where, after I have worked for someone a few times, they can hand me a list and say, “Take care of it.” They already know how I work. They know I will communicate clearly, tell them when something is a bigger project, charge them fairly, respect their home, and take care of the job.

That is what I want Steady Hand to become around town: a name people know, a service people find useful, and someone they are comfortable calling without having to start the search over every time something around the house needs attention.
